Safety

Art supply chemicals should be handled with care. We suggest that you keep all toxic art supplies out of the reach of children. Papermaking with children should be well supervised. The unfortunate fact is that many permanent colors are toxic, i.e. cadmium colors, zinc, etc.

One should make it a habit to avoid unnecessary contact with skin, never ingest or inhale the dust or fumes of art chemicals. Your mother was right, wash your hands prior to eating. This is especially important when eating finger food such as a sandwich, potato chips and french fries. Use a dust mask while products are in their powder form. Use rubber gloves when working with pigments and sizings (prior to retention) and especially when rinsing soda ash from cooked kozo, to prevent your skin from drying and chapping. Have fun and use common sense. Please inform us of any hazard we may have overlooked.
