Introduction to Papermaking

with David Kimball

October 20 & 21, Saturday &  Sunday,  10 am - 4 pm

This class is a general introduction to traditional European and Asian papermaking; we will also cover pouring pulp, paper casting, embossing and the use of paper as an artistic medium. Introductory papermaking in the morning,  hands-on-papermaking in the afternoons.

Fee: $140      Limited to 8 participants

David Kimball, co-director of Magnolia Editions, has taught papermaking at various institutions and worked with numerous artists for over twenty-five years.


Japanese Papermaking

with Carol Brighton

November 3, Saturday ,  10 am - 4 pm

Learn to make traditional washi step-by-step from cooking and beating the fiber to sheet formation and drying. You will make sheets on sugetas ( Japanese moulds) as well as on western style moulds. We will learn how to laminate inclusions in collage. We will also make momigami and explore different techniques for making decorative papers.

Fee: $85 Limited to 8 participants

Carol Brighton is a papermaker and artist. She makes paper for use in printmaking, as poured pulp paintings, and for 3d forms such as bowls. Her artwork is shown frequently. She teaches papermaking at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and printmaking and drawing in her studio. Her website is: www.carolbrighton.com

Beyond Lamps

with Jacqueline Mallegni

November 10, Saturday ,  10 am - 4 pm

During this workshop we will create a beautiful lantern that emits a diffuse glow going beyond standard lighting fixures. Students will design and build a structural form of rattan and/or bamboo to which you will apply handmade paper prepared especially for this class. Our focus is to investigate the structural as well as sculptural possibilities of working with the elements of paper,bamboo and rattan. We will discuss the concept of Wabi/Sabi, the quintessential Japanese aesthetic, and its effect on our creative process. This class is designed for beginners as well as those who have experience constructing form with natural materials.

Jacqueline Mallegni is a papermaker who delights in how light reveals the "spirit" of handmade paper. During the past twelve years Ms. Mallegni has focused her art on papermaking, designing, and fabricating sculptural lanterns. Papermaking for Teachers

November 17, Saturday ,  10 am - 4 pm

 

This class covers simple mould and deckle making, pulp processing and recycling, pressing and drying, the formation of shapes and patterns, adding flowers to paper, all scaled down for easy application in a classroom setting.
