Cinquecento Paper

Magnolia director Donald Farnsworth has worked for years to recreate the papers of the Italian Renaissance at a large scale for contemporary artists. This gallery represents a small sample of representative images from this endeavor, including details from actual Renaissance-era papers as well as Magnolia's efforts to recreate such papers. These efforts have hinged upon factors including the use of bast fibers (linen, hemp) in the paper pulp; the adoption of various beating methods; and -- crucially -- the use of felts made from sheep with 500-year-old DNA in their wool.

Farnsworth's A Quest for the Golden Fleece recounts the many episodes and challenges faced on the road to successfully recreating Cinquecento paper.
